So many people are selling items taken from vintage books and magazines on eBay, especially prints and advertisements, maps and other popular paper collectibles. It works like a dream, it can make big money on eBay, but there is one universal problem facing people selling vintage ephemera on eBay.

The question is: Once you have found a book with pictures and articles, and so on, which you think might generate lots of useful items for reselling on eBay. The question is: do you remove all of these potentially profitable bits and pieces from the book and sell them separately or might you make more money from selling the book intact?

There is an easy answer, based on just a little work before the auction begins.

The trick is not to dismantle anything from the book but to scan or photograph items you consider might sell individually while those items remain intact inside their original book or other publication.

Try as carefully as possible to make it appear the items are separate in your illustration and describe them as separate in your listing. It can be done but you may have a little difficulty adding a mount to created a ‘ready matted’ appearance. You can do it by opening the book or other publication as wide as possible, place the mount over the print or advertisement or whatever, then photograph the item carefully from above, then later crop any background outside the borders of the mount.

If enough of these items attract bids and are potential sellers, then remove them from the book and fulfill orders as separate items. If none sell or potential profits are too few to justify dismantling the book, then it might be best to cancel all bids and attempt to sell the book in its own right.
